While pilots and police often are among the most qualified witnesses to UFO events based on their particular skillsets, they historically have been reluctant to come forth out of fear of ridicule or being grounded from flying. While in recent years, the stigma against pilots has lessened greatly to the point where they are now encouraged to report possibly dangerous anomalies in the air, the men in blue still are reluctant to report a UFO sighting. That may soon be changing.
The Major Cities Chiefs Association (MCCA) website states “The mission of MCCA is to provide a forum for police executives from large population centers to address the challenges and issues of policing, to influence national and international policy that affects police services, to enhance the development of current and future police leaders, and to encourage and sponsor research that advances this mission.”
To that end, they published a reference guide for police on Unidentified Aerial Phenomena this past June.
MUFON feels very gratified that we are listed as a trusted “go to” source on page 1 and more prominently on page 10 for the general public and police officers to report a UFO/UAP to.
The eleven-page document educates law enforcement on UAP in the news, UAP throughout history, law enforcement considerations for threats to the public safety and identifies both civilian organizations like MUFON and government entities such as NASA and AARO.
The reference guide even lists website tools to help officers identify less obvious sky objects such as satellites, the Space Station and weather balloons often mistaken for UFOs.
Hopefully, by keeping the UFO issue in the news and educating the public and professionals alike, we draw ever closer to the day this most important issue may be resolved.
