To help guide you through the process, we have outlined the necessary steps for becoming a certified MUFON Field Investigator.

1 - Become a Member

The first step in becoming a MUFON Field Investigator is to join or renew your membership with MUFON. Only members in good standing are eligible to achieve Field Investigator status.

2 - Connect with Your State, Provincial, or National Director

To proceed, contact your local State, Provincial, or National Director. Click the “Find My State, Provincial, or National Director” button below for their contact information. Reach out to express your interest in becoming a Field Investigator. This is an opportunity to ask questions, introduce yourself, and highlight the skills you would bring to the role.

If you’re unable to contact your State Director, please reach out to Steve Hudgeons, Director of Investigations at doi@mufon.com.

For international candidates, please contact Robert Spearing, Director of Investigations for International at doii@mufon.com.

3 - Obtain the MUFON Field Investigator Manual

To proceed, you must purchase a hard copy of the MUFON Field Investigator Manual or subscribe to the online version through the MUFON Store (please note: the online version is not downloadable).

The manual is a vital resource for conducting thorough investigations, including witness interviews, on-site assessments, and interactions with public agencies. Structured Field Investigator training is essential to ensure that investigations are conducted competently and professionally. All trainees must have access to an original, current manual or an active subscription to the online version. Familiarity with the manual’s contents is a requirement for all trainees.

4 - Study the Field Investigator Manual

Study the MUFON Field Investigator Manual to familiarize yourself with the protocols and procedures for conducting investigations. In addition, you may purchase the Online Field Investigator Certification Training through MUFON University via the MUFON Store.

*Upon purchasing the manual, subscription, or training course, you will receive detailed instructions on how to access MUFON University and begin your training.

Before conducting an investigation, Field Investigator Trainees must be proficient in the following areas:

5 - Complete the Field Investigator Certification Exam at MUFON University

To take the certification exam, you must be enrolled at MUFON University (MU), where only certified investigators have full course access. Instructions for enrollment are included with your Field Investigator Manual.

To become a Field Investigator Trainee, you must score at least 80% on the exam, which tests your knowledge of investigative processes across topics like light and optics, sound, electromagnetic properties, physical traces, photography, radar, and celestial objects.

*Access to MUFON University courses is available only to certified investigators. Upon enrollment, you will have access to the exam, and optionally, the Training Course or Online Manual if purchased.

Upon approval as an investigator trainee, you’ll gain access to courses covering MUFON policies, case management, investigative techniques, and ufology. New courses are added regularly to support your growth as a Certified Field Investigator.

After passing the certification exam, complete the Field Investigator and Volunteer Onboarding courses to continue your training.

6 - Field Investigator Badge & Paperwork

After passing the exam, mail the required paperwork to MUFON Headquarters, including your name and MUFON membership number. Additionally, email a color headshot to hq@mufon.com with your name, membership number, and a note confirming the original paperwork has been sent.

The approval process will not proceed until all paperwork and the photo are received and approved. Detailed instructions for paperwork and forms are available at MUFON University. A background check will be conducted, and if the results aren’t acceptable to MUFON, Field Investigator designation will not be granted.

7 - Mentor with a Licensed MUFON Field Investigator

Upon passing the exam and completing the required paperwork and background check, you will be designated a Field Investigator Trainee. Contact your State, Provincial, or National Director for guidance. You will typically work with an experienced investigator on several cases before investigating independently. The Director will evaluate your progress and determine when to advance you to certified investigator status. This decision is at the discretion of the Director or their appointed representative.
