On May 16, 2024, Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN-02) introduced H.R. 8424, a bill mandating the declassification of all federal documents related to unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs). Co-sponsored by Reps. Jared Moskowitz (FL-23), Anna Paulina Luna (FL-13), and Eric Burlison (MO-07), the bill aims to increase government transparency regarding UAPs.
“This bill isn’t all about finding little green men or flying saucers,” Burchett stated. “It’s about forcing the Pentagon and federal agencies to be transparent with the American people. I’m sick of hearing bureaucrats telling me these things don’t exist while we’ve spent millions of taxpayer dollars on studying them for decades.”
The UAP Transparency Act requires the President to direct all federal agencies to release UAP-related documents within 270 days. Additionally, it mandates quarterly reports to Congress on the progress of declassification. This legislation follows another failed Pentagon audit, marking the sixth consecutive year of audit failures.
Burchett highlighted the Pentagon’s financial discrepancies, noting, “Our own Pentagon, which has not passed an audit in the history of audits literally, cannot account for over a half a trillion dollars.”
This bill represents a significant push towards accountability and transparency in federal UAP investigations.
