To assist the applicant in proposing a suitable position, the descriptions below outline the available volunteer roles. The established annual fee is uniform, regardless of the position approved. A resume or comparable statement of one's background is appreciated. All such declarations may be subject to verification.
Journal Subscriber: The person is assured receipt of twelve issues of the MUFON UFO Journal, a 24-page monthly magazine reporting on significant UFO incidents, research and topical issues.
Field Investigator Trainee: The person engages in an open-ended period of education in the UFO subject under the guidance of experienced individuals in order to become familiar with all aspects of case investigations. The trainee is expected to obtain and utilize the MUFON Field Investigator's Manual and, whenever possible, assist in conducting investigations of UFO events reported by the public.
Field Investigator: After gaining considerable knowledge of the UFO subject and investigative experience, the person is invited to take the Field Investigator's Examination, a prerequisite to field investigator status. In this position, the person is expected to communicate to local public agencies his/her investigative availability, to follow up on all referrals, and to prepare and submit an extensive report on each completed case, using the guidelines contained in the MUFON Field Investigator's Manual.
State Section Director: The person undertakes a supervisory role, assisting in the training of less experienced individuals, initiating case assignments when appropriate and monitoring the progress thereof. Field investigator functions are also encompassed in this position.
State/Provincial Director: The person assumes responsibility for overall leadership, including relationships with public agencies, recruitment and training of new members, assign and monitoring of investigations, proper submittal of case reports, and ongoing communications with all members. Field investigator functions are also encompassed in this position.
Research Specialist: The person possessing a Master of Arts / Sciences degree agrees to initiate, conduct and submit research projects on the UFO subject that utilize the individual's expertise.
Consultant: The person possessing a Doctoral degree agrees to initiate, conduct and submit research projects on the UFO subject that utilize the individual's expertise.
Astronomy: The person who possesses a telescope and actively engages in the study of astronomy agrees to assist the investigative membership as needed.
Amateur Radio Operator: A person possessing amateur radio equipment and license is invited to participate in a weekly one-hour broadcast (Saturday, 8 AM EST, 7.237 Megahertz, S.S.B.)
Associate Member: The same qualifications as a Field Investigator Trainee except that the member is under the age of 18 years.
Translator: A person willing and capable of translating foreign language correspondence and articles into English. Also, competent to answer correspondence in the designated foreign language(s).
Foreign Representative: A person with leadership and organizational abilities to represent the Mutual UFO Network in a liaison capacity between MUFON and the reputable UFO organizations within their country. The individual must be bilingual in their native language and English.
